On 23rd May 1997, the £74.3 m Eden Project was awarded a Millennium Commission grant of £37.15m. The Eden Project, one of the UK's top Landmark Millennium Projects, is now transforming a vast china clay pit, overlooking St. Austell Bay in Cornwall, the far south west peninsular of Britain, into a dramatic global garden. Nestling within a giant 50 metre deep crater overlooking St Austell Bay are two gigantic geodesic conservatories – one is a majestic rainforest cathedral – the other is host to the fruits and flowers of the Mediterranean, South Africa and California.

Interpretation, using creative art, sculpture and multi media within the landscape will bring the plant stories to life. In addition the grounds will contain the Visitor Centre, classrooms, an exhibition gallery, conferencing facilities, an amphitheatre and lake, and assorted catering and retail facilities containing plant products from all round the world.
